In 1776 the Dominguez-Escalante expedition traveled near Milford. Jedediah S. Smith & Jhon C. Fremont also traveled Beaver County. In 1850 Parley P. Pratt wrote, "This is an excellent place for an extensive settlement." It took six years for settlers to move in. The territorial legislature created Beaver County in January 1856. In 1873 the US made Fort Cameron in Beaver City. The troops protected against hostile Indians. They supported the Second District Court. John D. Lee had trial twice at the Fort but was imprisoned.
After the army left the Fort in 1883 they established Murdock Academy from 1898-1922. The academy was an LDS (Latter-Day Saint) school system and branch of Brigham Young Academy now known as BYU (Brigham Young University).

Wild Horse Canyon, 10 miles east of Milford was a big source of obsidian. They made weapons with the obsidian and traded them.
